COMMITTEES

Museums Alaska welcomes at-large members on many of its standing committees. If you’re interested in getting involved with one of the committees listed below, please contact us.

MUSEUMS ALASKA STANDING COMMITTEES, TASK FORCES, & PANELS

Advocacy Committee

ACTIVE: YEAR ROUND

oPEN TO 3+ NON-BOARD members

TERM: NONE

MEETS: EVERY OTHER MONTH UNLESS WORKING ON A TIME SENSITIVE ISSUE

TASKS:

  • HELPS SET PRIORITIES
  • HELPS RESEARCH
  • HELPS DRAFT LETTERS
  • HELPS OTHERS ADVOCATE THROUGH INFORMATION & RESOURCES

The Committee advocates on behalf of museums statewide, stays current on important museum-related issues statewide and nationally, and distributes information to our membership base on how to advocate for museum related-issues in their own community and at the state and national levels.

Alaska Art Fund Grant Review Panel

ACTIVE: Three cycles—March; Rolling Deadline in the Summer; November

OPEN TO 5 MEMBERS

TERM: three years on, one year off

MEETS: Once PER CYCLE (possibly more during rolling deadline)

TASKS:

  • READS ALL APPLICATIONS AND SCORES THEM
  • MEETS TO DISCUSS APPLICATIONS WITH PANEL
  • OFFERS THOUGHTS ON POTENTIAL GUIDELINES & APPLICATION CHANGES

The Committee reviews applications to the Alaska Art Fund and determines award amounts. The Committee may recommend improvements to grant application process, guidelines, and overall program.

Programming Committee

ACTIVE: YEAR ROUND

OPEN TO 5+ non-board MEMBERS PER SUBCOMMITTEE

TERM: NO TERM

MEETS: EVERY OTHER MONTH UNLESS WORKING ON A TIME SENSITIVE ISSUE

TASKS:
  • Vary by subcommittee, but will include research, planning, and hands-on work at events

This committee develops year-round professional development programs, including but not limited to webinars, cohorts, and networking events—online and in-person.

EMP Subcommittee

This subcommittee develops Emerging Museum Professional programming for the year. It is run by EMPs for EMPs.


Conference Committee

ACTIVE: YEAR ROUND

OPEN TO 5+ NON-BOARD MEMBERS PER SUBCOMMITTEE

TERM: NO TERM

MEETS: EVERY OTHER MONTH UNLESS WORKING ON A TIME SENSITIVE ISSUE

TASKS:
  • VARY BY SUBCOMMITTEE, BUT WILL INCLUDE RESEARCH, PLANNING, AND HANDS-ON WORK AT THE CONFERENCE

This committee plans Museums Alaska's conference.

This year we will be re-examining every aspect of the conference. Our next conference will be held in 2024.

Collections Management Fund Grant Review Panel

ACTIVE: TWO CYCLES: MARCH AND NOVEMBER

OPEN TO 5 MEMBERS

TERM: THREE YEARS ON, ONE YEAR OFF

MEETS: ONCE PER CYCLE

TASKS:

  • READS ALL APPLICATIONS AND SCORES THEM
  • MEETS TO DISCUSS APPLICATIONS WITH PANEL
  • OFFERS THOUGHTS ON POTENTIAL GUIDELINES & APPLICATION CHANGES

The Committee reviews applications to the Collections Management Fund and determines award amounts. The Committee may recommend improvements to grant application process, guidelines, and overall program.

Board Development Committee

ACTIVE: YEAR ROUND

NOT CURRENTLY OPEN TO NON-BOARD MEMBERS

This Committee works on board nominations and board development.

Communications and Membership Committee

ACTIVE: YEAR ROUND

OPEN TO 2+ NON-BOARD MEMBERS

TERM: NONE

MEETS: EVERY OTHER MONTH UNLESS WORKING ON A TIME SENSITIVE ISSUE

TASKS:

  • HELPS SET PRIORITIES
  • HELPS RESEARCH
  • HELPS WITH CURRENT PROJECTS

The Committee helps plan and execute communications through social media, emails, and other methods. The committee also communicates with members.

This year (2023), the committee will be helping us research other membership programs, reach out to members for their thoughts, and plan changes to our membership program. The committee will also be researching CRMs/fundraising databases, and potentially working on campaigns for Museums Alaska.

Finance & FUNd Development Committee

ACTIVE: YEAR ROUND

OPEN TO 2+ NON-BOARD MEMBERS

TERM: NONE

MEETS: EVERY OTHER MONTH UNLESS WORKING ON A TIME SENSITIVE ISSUE

TASKS:

  • REVIEWS FINANCES
  • HELPS SET FINANCIAL PRIORITIES
  • HELPS PLAN AND ENACT FUNDRAISING STRATEGIES

The Committee reviews Museums Alaska's finances and strategizes and employs methods of fundraising on behalf of the organization, with board and staff support, including organizing the annual auction, and the development of donor relationships and donor recognition.
